Early Wertz Families of Pennsylvania
Introduction to our Family Records
The Wertz Family Records is a
database of over 5,000 related individuals whose lineage is established and
maintained by linking the husbands and wives and children to parents.
1. Franklin County; Hans
Jacob Wertz, 1705-1775, who emigrated from Bretten, Baden, Germany to
Philadelphia in 1731; married Anna Barbara Hoff in 1734 at Coventry, Chester
County, Penn. By 1747 they were living
in what is now Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania with their five
children. Subsequent generations
lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and many other mid-western states. This family is outlined in detail in the
first six chapters of our book Wertz Wirt, Wuertz etc. Families of
Pennsylvania, 1400’s to 1990, by Carolyn Cell Choppin; are recorded in the
Ancestral File, and in the Wertz Relations Newsletters, published quarterly by

2. Bedford County; at least five families, settled early in Bedford
County. The MAY have been brothers,
and/or cousins. Paul Wertz, 1745-1825, married Catherine Stiffler. George
Wertz, 1752- 1836/37, married Nancy Christy. Henry Wertz,
married a. 1776 to Mary Ann Naugle. Peter Wirtz, a. 1745-1792, and
Elizabetha. Nicholas Wertz, 1783/4-1860, and Diana. These families are recorded in chapter 7
our our book , and in many of our newsletters. (PAF #31)
3. Frederick County, Maryland and Loudoun
County, Virginia; Wilhelm
Wertz Sr. and Jr. and Phillip Peter Wertz emigrated in 1753, settled
first near Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland before 1768, and then moved
to Loudoun County, Virginia. Records of
the descendants of William Sr., b.a. 1703, and Anna Catharina Wertz are found
in the records of the New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church at
Lovettsville, Loudoun County, Virginia; in the Ancestral File, IGI, in our
Wertz book, chapter 11, and

4. Lehigh,
Adams, and Perry Counties; Ulrich Wirt/Wertz, b.a.1712/20,
and Maria Schmit; emigrated in 1748 from Saarwerden County, Germany, settling
first in what is now Washington township, now Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Some of their ten children settled in
Lehigh, Adams, Perry, Northampton, and Fayette Counties of Pennsylvania, and
descendants are found in Ohio and many other midwestern states. Records of this family are in our Book,
from pages 238 to 250; and in many of our newsletters. (PAF #31 and 25)
5.
Berks County; Conrad
Wirt/Wertz, a.1712/32-1782, and Anna Juliana Berger, settled in Upper
Tulpehocken twp., Berks County, PA, where most of their eleven children were
baptised at the Blue Mountain Lutheran Church at Strausstown. Descendants spread throughout Pennsylvania
and Ohio; and are recorded mostly in our Newsletters. (PAF #31=R266, 35=R138, and 43=R70.)
6. Northumberland County; Hans/Johannes Wertz, 1720-1789,
emigrated from Massenbach, Germany in 1750 and settled in Northumbeland County, Pennsylvania. He may also be related to the Henry Wurtz
and/or Hans Martin Wurtz who emigrated on the same ship. Hans
Martin Wurtz/Wertz
settled in Mt. Joy twp., Lancaster Co., Penn.
Descendants of these families are recorded mostly in our newsletters,
some of whom use the “Vertz” spelling of our surname. (PAF #21=R505; #26=R1082)
7. Dauphin County; Johann
Adam Wert/Wirt, 1727-1830, and Eva Elizabeth Schnug, emigrated in 1727
from Berod in the Westerwald Region of Germany in 1753, settling in the Lykens
Valley of Dauphin County, Penn. There
many descendants are records in a book by Jonathan M. Wert of Port Royal,
Penn.; and some are outlined in Chapter 9 of our Book, and in many of the
newsletters. (PAF #37)
8.
Morris
County, New Jersey; Rev. Johannes Conrad Wirtz/Wurtz,
1706-1763, and Anna Goetschius emigrated from Zurich, Switzerland in 1735 and
settled in Morris County, New Jersey.
Descendants lived in New Jersey, New York State, Ohio, and many other
eastern and midwestern states. They are outlined briefly in Chapter 8 of
our book, and in many of our newsletters; and are documented extensively in

other “end of line” or “unattached emmigrant” ancestors of Pennsylvania Wertz
families. Some of these are recorded
