UPDATE: Conrad Wertz, 1819-1904, Stark and Carroll Counties, Ohio
(Conrad > Conrad & Anna Mary Cook > J.Conrad > Hans Jacob)
The following Ohio census records have been located for us by Bob Messersmith for this family:

1840, Paris Village, Stark County , Ohio; page 32:  “Conrad Wertz, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30”.  (This indicates that Conrad and Fanny Bush Wertz were probably just recently married and still without children.)

1850, Paris Twp., District 139, Stark County, Ohio; page 400, Dwelling #273, Family #277:  “Coonrad Wertz, age 30, born PA,  blacksmith, real estate $351.; (wife) Frances, age 29, born Ohio; (daughter) Mary, age 11*, born Ohio; (son) Alonzo, age 7, born Ohio; (daughter) Amanda, age 4, born Ohio; (son) Leander, age 1, born Ohio.”      (Note: * Mary Ellen is listed as age 11, but NO children were listed in 1840, so perhaps she is really only 10 by 1850???)
1850, Paris Twp., District 139, Stark County, Ohio; page 402, Dwelling #305, Family #319: “Joseph Arnold, age 22, born VA, carpenter; (wife) Hannah, age 22, born PA; (son) Monroe, age 11 months, born Ohio.”

1860, Paris Village, Paris Twp., Stark County, Ohio; page 463A, dwelling #114, family #113: “Conrad Wertz, age 40, born PA, blacksmith, real estate #350, personal property $150; (wife) Fanny, age 40, born Ohio, can’t read or write; (son) Olonz E., age 14, born Ohio, blacksmith; (daughter) Amanda, age 13, born Ohio; (son) Leander, age 11, born Ohio; (daughter) Rosannah, age 5, born Ohio.”

1860, Paris Village, Paris Twp., Stark County, Ohio; page 463B, dwelling #116, family #115:  “J. D. Arnold, age 31, born VA, farmer, real estate $1500, personal estate $1200; (wife) Hannah B. N., age 32, born PA; (son) Monroe J., age 10, born Ohio; (daughters) Bell Jane, age 7, born Ohio; Florence A., age 4, born Ohio; Gertrude, age 2, born Ohio.”

1870, New Harrisburg, Harrison Twp., Carroll County, Ohio; page 95, dwelling #153, Family #153:  “Conrad Wertz, age 57, born PA, blacksmith, personal estate $500; (wife) Hannah B., age 49, born PA; (daughter) Rosanna Wertz, age 15, born Ohio; (step-daughter – probably Florence) Arnold*, age 13, female, born Ohio; (step-daughter) Gertrude (Arnold), age 11, born Ohio.”    (NOTE: apparently the census taker entered Florence as “Arnold Wertz, female”; and also listed Gertrude as a Wertz child.  Perhaps after Conrad and Hannah married in 1867, her children choose to use the Wertz surname?)

1880, Harrison Twp., Carroll County, Ohio:
page 83C:  “Oliver Orin, age 25, born Ohio, farmer, both parents born Ohio; wife Gertrude, age 22, born Ohio, father born Ohio, mother born PA; daughter Dianah G. (or Hannah?), age 5 months, born Ohio.”
Page 92A:  “Daniel C. Need, age 29… wife Bell J. Need, age 26…”   (see News #47, page 4)
Next door:  “Conrad Hertz, age 58… wife Hannah, age 56…”    (see News #47, page 4)
Next door:  “Mary Arnold, widow, age 30…”     (see News #47, page 4)
Same page, a few doors away:  “James Barr, age 71… wife Eliza, age 70…”   (see News #47, page 4)  Next door to them:  “John Barr, age 31… wife Rosa Barr, age 25…”   (see News #47, page 4).

1900, Harrison twp., Carroll County, Ohio; page 90, dwelling #121, family #122:  “Conrad Wertz, age 80, born October 1819, born PA, blacksmith, married 59 years, both parents born PA, owns farm free of mortgage; wife Hannah B., age 73, born Sept. 1822, born PA, married 39 years, no children (by THIS marriage!), both parents born PA;  step-daughter-in-law, Mary C. Arnold, age 50, born Sept. 1849, born Ohio, widow, one child born, one child living, father born PA, mother born Ohio;  step-granddaughter-in-law, Libby or Tabby Blondell, age 26, born Nov. 1873, born PA, married 3 years, 1 child born, 1 child living, both parents born Ohio.”

Conclusions
These records tell us that Conrad and Frances “Fanny” Bush Wertz probably married about 1839; and that of their five children, Mary Ellen “Fanny” Wertz Bates was the eldest, probably born in late 1840 (after that census was taken); and probably married before the 1860 census was taken.
That Alonzo Wertz was their second child, born about 1843/45.
Next was Amanda Wertz Eisenzimmer, born 8 Feb. 1848; married 20 Oct 1867. (see below)
Their fourth child was Leander Wertz, 1849-1941.
And their last child was Rose Wertz Barr, 1855-1892.
(We already had dates for Leander and Rose – see Wertz Newsletter #47, page 6)

These records also tell us that Fanny Bush Wertz probably died between 1860 and 1867, when Conrad remarried to neighbor, Hannah Coates Arnold.   Hannah’s obituary (see News #47, page 5) says that her first husband, Joseph Arnold died in 1859.   But he is clearly listed on the 1860 Census!  Perhaps he also died between 1860 and 1867!

These records also tell us about when the children of Hannah and Joseph Arnold were born:
Son Monroe J. Arnold, born about 1849/50 (11 months in 1850; age 10 in 1860).  (NOTE: this means he was age 23 when he died in 1873.   So the step-daughter-in-law,  Mary C. Arnold living with Conrad and Hannah in 1900, and next door to them in 1880, is very likely the widow of Monroe J. Arnold.  And the Libby or Tabby Blondell, born November 1873 is probably the “sister” (daughter) of Mary and Monroe Arnold, listed as Jennie E. Arnold, age 6 in 1880.    Anyone have any records to the contrary?)

Daughter Bell Jane Arnold, born about 1853 (age 7 in 1860; 26 in 1880 and married to Daniel C. Need).
Daughter Florence A. Arnold, born about 1856 (age 4 in 1860; 13 in 1870).  Probably the Mrs. James Holmes in Hannah’s obituary.
Daughter Gertrude Arnold, born about 1858 (age 2 in 1860; 11 in 1870; 22 in 1880 and married to Oliver Orin.)

Descendant Sharon L. Gonzalez has not yet received any replies from the Stark County genealogical society or courthouse, as to more records on these families.   We are still looking there for marriage records for Conrad and Frances “Fanny” Bush Wertz, probably about 1839; for Conrad and Hannah in 1867; for Mary Ellen “Fanny” Wertz Bates, probably before 1860; for Amanda Wertz Eisenzimmer, probably before 1870;  and perhaps for some of the other Wertz and Arnold children.

We also need death records for Frances “Fanny” Bush Wertz, and Joseph Arnold, probably both died between 1860 and 1867, and for Amanda Wertz Eisenzimmer who died in March 1874.      ANY help finding these records would be appreciated.

UPDATE: Amanda Wertz Eisenzimmer
Just received! Several pages of records from descendant Frances O’Connor, including a copy of the records found in the John Eisenzimer Family Bible!    This Family Bible record reads as follows:

"John Eisenzimer, born Jan. 1, 1842; died Oct. 8, 1908; married 20 October 1867, Stark County, Ohio to Amanda Wertz, born Feb. 8, 1848, Stark County, Ohio; died March 24, 1874, age 26 years, of Consumption in New Harrisburg, Ohio; buried in the Paris Church Cemetery, Paris, Ohio.   Children:  Francis Eisenzimer, born Sept. 21, 1868; Perry Eisenzimer born Nov. 3, 1870; James Eisenzimer, born June 5, 1872.”

This couple is recorded in the IGI as "John Eisenginer and Amanda Wirtz, married 20 Oct 1857, Stark County, Ohio".   (NOTE: date is incorrect by ten years, and both surnames are misspelled!   However, the correct date of 20 October 1867 appears on the Stark County Marriage records.)

So far the only census records found (by Bob Messersmith) for this family are as follows: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 Stark County, Ohio Census records for the family of Michael and Catherine “Ozenzimer/Eisenzimer”; who are the parents of John Eisenzimer; and for John’s brother Michael and family.     AND:

1900, Perkins Twp., Erie County, Ohio; Ohio state Soldiers and Sailors Home:  “John Eisenzimer, age 58, born January 1842, widower, born Ohio, parents born France.”
Eisenzimer family records state that John Eisenzimer died in 1908 in Buffalo, Wyoming!

Descendant Frances O’Connor says: “My grandfather, Perry Eisenzimer changed his name to Thomas Jefferson Doyle, moved to Montana and married Margaret Shane, who was half Crow Indian.  They had at least 10 children, many of whom lived near or on the Crow Reservation, All used the surname of Doyle.   My father, Thurlow Gray Doyle and my Uncle Raymond Wesley Doyle left and became career military officers.”

Frances also has records stating that “John Eisenzimer was in the Ohio Infantry, enlisting in Massillon, Plain Township, Stark County, Ohio on 11 August 1862; and he mustered out in Greensboro, North Carolina on 17 June 1865.   He married Amanda Wertz in Stark County, Ohio on 20 October 1867 and they had two or three children.  (Family Bible – above - lists three)   After the death of Amanda Wertz Eisenzimmer (in 1874), “within several months”,  John remarried to Mary C. Walton Leyda, widow of George Leyda of Harrison Township, Carroll County, Ohio.

About 1878 they moved to Michigan, and in 1890 they were living at Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Mary applied for a pension as George Leyda’s widow.   By 1898 they were living in Cleveland, Ohio; and by 1901 they were in Sandusky, Ohio.  From 1901 to 1906 John was living on the Crow Reservation in Parkman, Wyoming and Columbus, Montana (probably with his son, Perry aka Tom Doyle.)   (Perhaps his second wife died in Michigan or  Ohio – probably before 1900 – as John is then living as a widower in the Soldiers and Sailors home!  See 1900 Census records above.)

Frances also tell us that “John Eisenzimer was the 93rd resident of the newly opened Veterans’ Home of Wyoming at 700 Veteran’s Lane, Buffalo, WY, at age 66 years.  He was admitted there on June 15th, 1908 and died October 6, 1908.

Records for James Eisenzimmer are unknown to the descendants of his brother Perry (aka Tom Doyle).

However Bob found the following in the 1920 Census for Manhatten, New York City, New York; page 25A, Dwelling #52, Family #200, address 360 West 42nd Street, Manhatten: "James Eisenzimer, age 48(?), single, laborer, theatrical, born Ohio, parents born Ohio."
And in 1930, listed in ward 31, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio; page 161, dwelling #8, family #34:  "James Eisenzimmer, age 57, single, roomer, stage hand, theater, born Ohio, parents born Ohio."

These records certainly appear to be for this James Eisenzimmer, born 5 June 1872 according to his father’s family Bible!

WANTED: Does anyone have access to cemetery records for the Paris Church Cemetery at Paris, Stark County, Ohio?    Was Amanda Wertz Eisenzimmer perhaps buried near her mother, Frances “Fanny” Bush Wertz??
