J.Adam Wirt, 1790-1846
From Union (now Syyder) County, PA to Crawford County, Ohio
In our Wertz Newsletter #51, page 4 is a paragraph titled “Untraced Pennsylvania Adam Wirt/Wert”.  Jonathan Wert of Port Royal, PA correctly reminds us that this J. Adam Wirt, was born 17 Jan. 1790 in the Lykens Valley, Upper Paxton township, Dauphin County, baptized on 7 Feb. 1790 at Wirth’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Killinger, PA; the son of Johann Christian Wirt(h), 1759-1819, and Catherine Bretz; and is recorded on page 226 of our Wertz book.

However, in our book, we have listed six children of Johann Adam and Margareth Wirth: Jesaya; Imanuel: Friederich; Martin; Joseph; and William.   These are based on baptismal records of the Reformed Church in Chapman Township, Snyder County, PA.     Jonathan says the J.Adam and Margaret Wirt(h) had nine known children: Isaiah, Emanuel, Frederick, Martin, Joseph, William, George, Christian, and Leah Wirt.    As noted in our newsletter article, the Ancestral File record of this family identifies only four of those children: Isaiah, Immanuel, Frederick, and D. Martin Werth.    The Ancestral file also records the two wives and fifteen children of Isaiah Wert, all born in Crawford County, Ohio.

Johann Christian Wirt(h) died 22 September 1819 in what was then Union County, PA; and is buried at the Grubbs Lutheran Church Cemetery in Chapman Township.   Sometime before 1842, J. Adam Wert(h) moved his family to Crawford County, Ohio; as the IGI records the marriages of eldest son, Isaiah Wert, in 1842 and in 1859, along with several of his children’s marriages as taking place in Crawford County, or Clark County, Ohio.

As always, any additions or corrections to these records are welcome at:
