In Wertz Newsletter #38, page 3, we inquired about the possibility that Elizabeth Wirt Davis, 1832-1932, might be the eldest daughter of John Clinton Werts, 1809-1886, and Elizabeth Jane Weaver. Elizabeth Davis is believed to have had a sister who married a Mr. Sapp, and another sister who married a Mr. Weller.
Bob Messersmith of Laurel, Maryland found this John Clinton Werts family in the 1850 Indiana Census, in Dearborn County, City of Aurora, page 216, Dwelling #14, Family #15, listed as follows: "John C. Worts, age 41, miller, RE $400, born Ohio; Jane E., age 35, born VA; William, age 16, printer, born Ohio; Maria, age 14, born Ohio; James, age 12, born Ohio; Susan, age 10, born Ohio; Washington, age 8, in school, born Ohio; Amanda, age 6, born Ohio; Anabel, age 4, born Ohio; Henry, age 1, born Indiana."
The oldest known daughter, Jane, born a. 1833 is missing from this census record. Perhaps she is living with and/or working for another family at age 17/18. Did she remain in Ohio? IF she is our Elizabeth (Jane?) Wirt Davis, she was not married until August 1858, in Ohio; unless that was a second marriage.
This 1850 Census identifies one, maybe two more children in this John Clinton Werts family: Maria, age 14 in 1850, was not listed in any of our previous records of this family. And Henry, age 1 in 1850, is either Charles Henry, or another previously unlisted child. William, James, Susan, G.Washington, Amanda, and Anabel (or Arabella) were already known; and at least two more children were born after 1850: Eliza about 1852; and J.H. Werts born about 1856. Were there others?
Does anyone have an 1860 and/or 1870 Census record for this family?
Does anyone have any 1850 to 1880 marriage records for any of these children, probably in or near Dearborn County, Indiana?
